ASME Competitions at the Student Professional Development Conference (SPDC)

A COMPETITION ENTRY FORM MUST BE COMPLETED AND SUBMITED TO PARTICIPATE.
ALL COMPETITITORS MUST REGISTER TO ATTEND THE CONFERENCE TO PARTICIPATE.

REGISTERING TO ATTEND THE CONFERENCE DOES NOT ENTER YOU INTO A COMPETITION.
SUBMITTING A COMPETITION ENTRY FORM DOES NOT REGISTER YOU FOR THE CONFERENCE.

Eligibility Requirements and Entry Forms

Each competitor must be a Undergraduate Dues Paid Student Member of ASME who:

has not received an engineering degree
(Student Members who complete the requirements for their baccalaureate engineering degree, or who actually received that degree at the end of a term, semester, or quarter, a short time before a scheduled conference may still participate. These Student Members, however, must not have completed their degree requirements before December 1, 2007.)

has been selected by his/her Student Section to participate

has been certified as a Student Member in good standing. (To be thus certified, a new or renewing Student Member must have filed an application and paid the required dues prior to submittal of contest entry form.)

A Entry Form must be submitted to participate.
Entry Forms must be RECEIVED by March 21, 2008

Old Guard Oral Presentation Competition

Rules

 

An engineer, like all professionals, must possess a well-developed ability to communicate, both orally and in writing. This competition is designed to emphasize the value of an ability to deliver oral presentations. Competitors in the Oral Presentation Competition may not compete in the Old Guard Technical Poster Competition.

 LOCAL COMPETITION PRIZES:
First $500.00 A trip to compete in the final competition at ASME's IMECE
Second $150.00 Third $100.00 Fourth $50.00 Fifth (Optional) $25.00
High Score In Technical Competition $50.00
The Old Guard also pays for a one time membership upgrade for any student members who participates in the competition.
INTERNATIONAL FINALS PRIZES at ASME's 2008 IMECE in Boston, MA
First $2,000.00 Second $1,500.00 Third $1,000.00 Fourth $500.00
 

Old Guard Technical Poster Competition

Rules

 

Engineers, like all professionals, must possess a well-developed ability to communicate. This poster competition for local spring student conferences is designed to emphasize the ability to deliver visual presentations. Competitors in the Old Guard Technical Poster Competition may not compete in the Old Guard Oral Presentation Competition.

 PRIZES: The Old Guard will provide a first place prize of $200 for each spring student conference competition.

The Old Guard also pays for a one time membership upgrade for any student members who participates in the competition.
 

Technical Web Page Competition

Rules

 

This web page design competition is intended to encourage the delivery of visual presentations using web page technology. (No Limit on Number of Entries per Student Section) Undergraduate Students Only.

 PRIZES: The Old Guard will provide a first place prize of $200 for each spring student conference competition.
 

2008 Student Design Competition: Winrobo

Problem Statement

 

This competition, sponsored by the ASME Center for Professional Development, Practice & Ethics and the ASME Knowledge and Community Sector, requires individuals or teams of up to four student members design, construct and operate a prototype meeting the requirements of a problem statement (No Limit on Number of Teams, however, a student may participate only one team.) Undergraduate Students Only

 SPDC COMPETITION PRIZES:
Teams that place first at Student Professional Development Conferences are invited to participate in an international competition held at ASME's International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition (IMECE).
1st Place: Teams receive $500, a trophy, and a travel allowance to go to the finals of up to $1200 per team with a maximum of four team members.

2nd Place: Teams receive $300 and a plaque.
3rd Place: Teams receive $150 and a plaque.

INTERNATIONAL FINALS PRIZES
at
ASME's 2008 IMECE in Boston, MA
1st Place: The prize consists of $3000 plus $1000 awarded to the Student Section of the Winner's Institution.
2nd Place: The prize consists of $1000 plus $500 awarded to the Student Section of the Winner's Institution.
3rd Place: The prize consists of $500 plus $250 Awarded to the Student Section of the Winner's Institution.
