ASME EARLY CAREER TECHNICAL JOURNAL (ECTC:2009)

Reviewed and accepted papers presented at ASME ECTC 2009 will be published in the ASME Early Career Technical Journal.
Papers that are submitted for ECTC:2009 which are not accepted for publication in the ECTC:2009 Journal but based on review by the Editorial Board are considered as “a second tier of papers” for ECTC:2009 will be allowed to be presented at the ECTC:2009.

CONFERENCE PURPOSE

In today's competitive engineering job market, employers and engineering managers are looking for the technical credentials that separate one candidate from another. This is especially true for recent engineering graduates and engineers in the very early stages of their careers.

The Conference Coordinating Committee along with the sponsors, in keeping with ASME's mission of "promoting and enhancing the technical competency and professional well-being of our members," has organized this conference as a forum for enabling early-career engineers and graduate students to develop their "technical credentials" and to establish their "professional identity."

This program is designed to enhance the ability of graduate students and early-career engineers to compete in an ever more demanding and changing global market place by providing and developing such skills as verbal and written communication, teamwork and independent decision-making, system-level and integrated thinking, and Interdisciplinary skills, and the demonstrated technical performance that will make them standout among their peers.

Recognizing today’s Engineering Market Place and the impact of globalization, ECTC:2009 would be open to allied disciplines from around the world. Inter-disciplinary applications having a semblance and overlap with Mechanical Engineering topics would be welcome.

In providing conferences such as this, The Conference organizers hope to establish a bond between ASME and the early-career engineer that encourages continued participation in ASME activities, increased use of ASME resources and programs, and reinforces the concept of "ASME for a Lifetime."

WHO SHOULD PARTICIPATE
Participation of graduate students, early-career engineers and early-career faculty members from the United States, Canada and around the world is encouraged in three categories:

• Category A - Graduate Students
Graduate students, currently enrolled in a Mechanical Engineering graduate program at a college or university can submit papers. Mechanical Engineering undergraduate students involved in research in association with their supervising faculty and/or graduate student researchers can also submit papers as first author. For details, contact the ECTC Chair.

• Category B - Early-Career Engineers
Recent engineering graduates who received their B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering or related, as well as allied, fields between January 2004 and May 2009 can submit papers in this category. Related fields include those that interface with varied aspects of mechanical engineering and its applications.

• Category C - Early-Career Faculty Members
Early-Career faculty are also encouraged to submit papers.

THE ASSIGNMENT
• Submit papers, subject to the guidelines listed in the "Paper Submission Rules" Section, for presentation at the ASME Early Career Technical Conference, October 2-3, 2009. See the link for “ASME Early Career Technical Journal PAPER FORMAT.”

THE TOPICS
• Candidates may choose any subject matter that they have worked on or submitted as part of their academic or professional career. Topics may encompass the full range of mechanical engineering described by the 38 technical divisions of ASME International.

• Category A - Graduate Students are encouraged to submit papers on a topic related to past, current and on-going projects related to their academic work.
• Category B - Early-Career Engineers are encouraged to submit papers on topics related to their senior or graduate projects, or a topic related to their current work activity. (Please Note: If you are submitting a topic related to work, be sure you have your company's approval).
• Category C - Early-Career Faculty Members are encouraged to submit papers on topics related to their area of expertise.

THE REWARDS
• Certificate of Appreciation: All authors of accepted papers that comply with the submission rules will receive a Certificate of Appreciation.

• Registration: Accepted paper presenters will be waived the entire amount of ECTC 2009 registration fees, which is $50. Hence, paper presenters will receive complimentary registration. In addition, paper presenters will get an honorarium of $50. Arrangements have been made for accommodating 40 presenters for free registration and the honorarium.

• Presentation in ASME Early Career Technical Conference: For ECTC 2009 there will be two levels of paper acceptance. First level of paper acceptance will be papers that are reviewed and selected for publication in the ASME Early Career Technical Journal. The presenters of these papers are waived registration fees of $50, in addition to the honorarium of $50. First level presenters are restricted to forty (40) presenters. Second level of paper acceptance will be papers that are deficient for publication purposes but are still encouraged to present the papers at the Conference, hoping it will help them articulate their subject matter for subsequent Conferences. Second level of presenters is restricted to ten (10) presenters and need to pay the Conference Registration Fees of $50. However, the presenters will get a Certificate of Appreciation for ECTC2009.

• Presence at the entire ECTC 2009 proceedings on October 2nd and 3rd is a requirement for receiving ECTC 2009 Rewards.

• Complimentary ASME ECTC Journal: Authors who have papers selected for inclusion in the Journal will receive a complimentary copy of the Journal on a specially prepared CD.

• Publication at ASME Website: Accepted papers will be posted at the ASME Conference Website for easy access and wider dissemination of information. Hence, the conference papers will enjoy wider exposure and availability to the engineering community.

WHY SHOULD YOU PARTICIPATE
This event provides an opportunity to gain experience that engineers need in today’s workplace to set you apart from other engineers and enhance your career progression.

• You will develop and refine your research and writing skills.
• Learn how to better prepare a technical paper or presentation.
• Learn multi-disciplinary knowledge from other presenters.
• You will gain invaluable experience by practicing your presentation skills in front of a small and friendly audience. This will prepare young engineers to make successful presentations at other conferences and industrial settings.
• By authoring and presenting a paper, you will be building your technical resume with a tangible technical publication.
• You will gain technical recognition for yourself and your school or company.
• You will meet and network with other early-career engineers, faculty members, ASME senior members and leadership and learn more about the profession.
